Gulfport Hardwood Holiday Classic
The Gulfport basketball program is built on the history of nine state championships, more than any other public school in the state of Mississippi. Another part of that tradition is the Hardwood Holiday Classic.
This year marks the 34th annual premier high school basketball tournament in Mississippi featuring eight of the best teams in the state, south of Jackson.
The other seven teams are Long Beach, Harrison Central, West Harrison, St. Martin, Pascagoula, Meridian and Madison Central who, if you throw Gulfport in the mix, have twice as many combined wins as they do losses.
That’s plenty of Christmas cheer to go around, set to tip off a week from today. Gulfport Guard Miles Daniels said, “It’s the tradition. A lot of good players have come through and played in it. We always have teams from out of town that are really good like last year they had Metamora all the way from Chicago. Just good teams and good competition and everybody comes out.”
Gulfport Head Boys Basketball Coach Owen Miller said, “Some of my friends say ‘Owen, you’ve only won it one time and it’s your tournament. You’re supposed to win the thing.’ But we see it the other way, we want to be tested and find out where we’re at. But just playing in it, I remember playing in the tournament and playing alongside so many great players and playing for Coach Jenkins and Coach Austin. Those are the things that I really appreciate and it kind of, now coaching in it brings back those memories.”
Win or lose, all eight teams are guaranteed three games apiece no matter what. The tournament runs Wednesday through Friday of next week.
