Golden Eagles stun Louisiana Tech with 2OT thriller

According to ESPN, the Southern Miss football team had less than a one percent chance to win with a minute 28 seconds left to go at Louisiana Tech. In typical USM fashion, the .2 percent prevailed.
The Golden Eagles made it interesting down by 11 points in the waning moments on Saturday, but sophomore quarterback Keon Howard led the comeback of all comebacks culminating with a 34-27 double overtime victory.
The Black and Gold were able to overcome his almost costly interception in the first OT, but the end result was well worth the high blood pressure as Southern Miss won the rivalry in Dixie for the third year in a row. Southern Miss Defensive Coordinator Tony Pecoraro said, “Definitely probably the craziest of my career at least, for sure. I mean being down by 11 with four minutes left and the way it was when you think about all that we had to overcome just to get to that point, it was crazy.”
Southern Miss Head Football Coach Jay Hopson said, “I don’t know if there words of encouragement at that time, I’d be lying if I said that, but it is a learning experience. And at the end of the day the thing about Keon, and I said that last night, I’m so proud of the young man because Keon, it would have been easy for a guy to melt. But Keon just came right back and threw a touchdown pass in the second overtime, and basically was a game-winning pass.”
Southern Miss Defensive Lineman Delmond Landry said, “I was like kind of on the sack also, so I was jumping up, screaming, I was crawling, I was doing all type of stuff. I wanted to do a backwards flip, but I’m too big to do a backwards flip. I’m way too big.”
Next up for the Eagles is a home game as they reunite with UAB for the first time since temporarily disbanding the football program. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. on Saturday.
The week after that, Southern Miss will head up to Knoxville to take on its second SEC opponent of the year, the other being Kentucky on the season opener.
On Saturday, November 4th, USM and Tennessee will kick things off at 6:30 p.m. on the SEC Network. That game time was announced earlier today.
