Golden Eagles coming off 24-0 homecoming win over UTEP

On Saturday, the Southern Miss football team put up more than 400 yards of total offense for the fifth game in a row, but it’s what the defense did against UTEP that made for a happy homecoming.
Of course, the 24 points are nice, but pitching a shutout is even nicer. The Golden Eagles held the opposition to 147 yards and just 17 on the ground en route to their second shutout of the season. That’s the first time since 1999 that USM has done that twice in the same season and the first time since 2001 that it’s happened against a Conference USA opponent.
The 24-0 victory has Southern Miss back on track in league play and that’s something to get defensive about. Head Coach Jay Hopson said, “I thought we played well on defense on Saturday. I thought offensively we had a lot of explosive plays that lot of them were called back, but I thought we did a good job on explosive plays. And just I thought special teams we might have had a few difference-maker plays there, but I thought for the whole we played hard and got the W.”
Running back Ito Smith said, “It was an ugly win, but we’ll take it any day. The defense, they played their tail off. They had our back the whole game, so hats off to them.”
The 4-2 Golden Eagles will travel to Ruston to take on rival Louisiana Tech at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
