Firing Squad Bill Moves Forward

A suggestion from Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood to bring back a firing squad as an alternative to lethal injection as a form to execute prisoners is one step closer to moving through the state legislature.

Under the proposed bill, a firing squad can be used if officials decide lethal injection is too expensive or unavailable.

The Mississippi house amended the bill before passing it by a large majority.

The added measure makes secret the names of prison employees at an execution as well as the pharmacy providing lethal drugs.

It also makes secret the names of family members of the prisoner.

Supporters say the measure protects those involved in executions from harassment.

The bill now goes back to senate for more work.
