Construction on Biloxi Boardwalk delayed due to nesting Least Terns
Construction on a nearly $900,000 project in Biloxi comes to a halt.
Least tern birds are nesting right where construction is taking place for the new West Biloxi Boardwalk. Construction stopped when contractors discovered the birds and the nesting area was roped off.
Biloxi Public Relations Representative Vincent Creel says they are hoping the birds will leave the nest by the end of June and the project will be able to move forward with construction. “We immediately notified Fish and Wildlife since we were working in an area where we wanted to be sensitive to wildlife. The Least Terns, as people know, have nested here for decades and decades and decades and the problem is they can’t read so they don’t know where the nesting areas are.”
Despite the terns, the project is still on track to be complete by the deadline. City officials hope it will be done in time for Cruisin’ the Coast.
