Cold weather shelters opening

Although our area didn’t see any flurries, the temperatures tonight are expected to dip to freezing and below. So cold weather shelters are opening their doors to help keep people warm on the Coast.

At the Salvation Army in Gulfport they expected and prepared for a full house. They opened the shelter last night and will again tomorrow.

The Salvation Army opens up this shelter anytime temperatures are expected to drop below 35.

They have separate sections for men and women to sleep. You must have a photo ID and be checked for weapons before entering.

This is to ensure that everyone in the shelter remains safe which is what the Salvation Army is all about. Volunteer Coordinator Roy Fisher said, “Our motto is doing the most good and we were founded in 1865 on the whole basis of soups, soap, and salvation, taking care of people. We are commissioned by God to do so. If we don’t do that then what’s the purpose of being here. It’s important to do it on a daily basis, but especially in times like this and working with our homeless as well.”

They are looking for volunteers at the shelter for tomorrow night. If you would like to volunteer, call 228-374-8301.

The shelter in Gulfport is not the only location that will be open tonight and tomorrow. The multi-purpose building in D’Iberville also opened their doors tonight.
