City of D’Iberville honors DHS Class of 2020 with senior parade

As they prepare for graduation, D’Iberville High School seniors received a one-of-a-kind send off from the community this weekend that they’ll never forget.

A school year unlike any other is drawing to a close for the seniors at D’Iberville High School in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Senior Brandon Clark said, “I could not see this happening at any other time other than now.”

But during a time of change and sacrifice for all of them, City of D’Iberville leaders and school staff pulled out all the stops to give them the recognition they deserve in parade format. D’Iberville High Principal Cheryl Broadus said, “All it took was a phone call and said ‘Hey, I have an idea. Let’s talk about it,’ and they were on board. The fire department, the police department, the city officials, the mayor’s office, everyone, it’s just a great community to be part of.”

Seniors began the afternoon on Saturday at Warrior Stadium decorating their vehicles in every creative way imaginable.

For many of them, just the chance to see each other in person again made the day special. Senior Graham Smith said, “It’s cool. It’s good to see everybody, except I have to stay away from them which isn’t as cool, but I understand why.”

As the parade rolled down Lamey Bridge Road and turned towards the town green along rows of cheering family members and friends, Principal Broadus expressed her sense of pride for Warrior Nation. “They’re making history here. What they have been exposed to, they can grow from this and be changers, you know, the catalyst of change.”

While they’ll be moving on, seeing this show of community support has made an impact on graduates. Smith said, “It’s really nice when people come together to do something and have a purpose in doing something. They’re very loving and kind and understanding and it makes me glad D’Iberville is cool like that.”
