Scott Colom holds rally in Jackson Wednesday
JACKSON, Miss. (WXXV)- Democratic Senate Candidate Scott Colom says he expects to win Mississippi’s razor-thin Senate race.
As of midday Wednesday, 95.6% of votes had been counted. Colom narrowly leads Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith by fewer than 100 votes.
Because the race is a general congressional race, there will be no runoff. The top vote getter will take the seat.
At an event addressing supporters Wednesday, Colom said his team was prepared for a close race. “I just want to start off by thanking the people of Mississippi. Thank you for using your power. We are blessed to have prepared for this moment. Unlike all the people across the country that might be surprised, our campaign, our volunteers, the people of Mississippi are not surprised. We’re prepared for this moment. We have been planning for this scenario for weeks. We have hundreds of volunteers. We’ve got local lawyers that will be at the county meetings in each county. We will protect the process of this election. We will protect the integrity of this election.”
In a statement released Wednesday, Hyde-Smith said her campaign is ‘closely monitoring the remaining count.’ She is confident that once all the votes are counted, she will be re-elected.
