City of Biloxi announced project to reduce sand on Highway 90

For the past several days strong southeasterly winds have created sandstorms for drivers along Highway 90, causing hazardous conditions for drivers and headaches for MDOT crews, with some drivers even getting their vehicles stuck.

Mayor Andrew FoFo Gilich announced Capitol Project 1036 with $2 million in funding from Gulf of Mexico oil and gas leases that will foresee a 10-foot concrete walkway fitted on top of the existing seawall.

Running one mile from Oak Street to the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor, it will have a knee wall that will trap sand on the beach and prevent debris from scattering onto the highway.

The project is currently being worked on and is expected to be completed eight months from now in February 2022.
