Challenge Course added to soccer complex in Jackson County
Jackson County supervisors on Friday will officially open a new Challenge Course at the West Jackson County Soccer Complex in St. Martin.
The ribbon-cutting will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the complex on Yellow Jacket Street in St. Martin. Supervisors will be joined by children from the YMCA, Pascagoula Recreation Day Camp, In the Zone Day Camp and Let’s Go! Gulf Coast.
The $453,000 project is one of several phases of the WJC Soccer Complex Master Plan. It includes a challenge course with seven elements, a 40-yard dash, ADA sidewalks, drainage and improvements to the parking lot.
Both the 40-yard dash and the Challenge Course have timing systems that allow individuals to race against the clock to achieve their best times.
The course is recommended for ages 13 years and up and it is designed to encourage individuals of all fitness levels to engage in more moderate to vigorous physical activity, while enjoying the health benefits of doing so. It offers a variety of aerobic, muscle/strength, core, balance, and flexibility equipment to provide a well-rounded fitness routine. The Course models some of the adventure racing style fitness equipment and is recognized as a PlayCore National Demonstration Site (playcore.com/nds).
In addition to the new Challenge Course, the West Jackson County Soccer Complex features two lighted fields and a newly constructed $584K concession and restroom facility. The county also invested $150K to pave the parking lot last year. Future phases of the Master Plan include two more soccer fields on the north side of the property, additional parking improvements, a dog park and pump track, along with shade structures, benches, and picnic tables.
The WJC Challenge Course was designed by Compton Engineering, Inc. and constructed by Greater Gulf Development. The concession and restroom facility was designed by Machado Patano and constructed by Phoenix Construction.
