Building fire shuts down Highway 49 in between 19th Street and 23rd Street in Gulfport

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV) — A building fire in the Gulfport Historic District shut down part of Highway 49 Thursday morning.

The Gulfport Fire Department says they received a call at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday reporting a fire at Alston’s Antiques and Gifts near the intersection of Highway 49 and 22nd Street.

Gulfport Fire Chief Michael Beyerstedt says the department was able to make contact with the owners of the building. They say the power to the building was recently turned off and there had been issues with squatters using the building.

Investigators will look into whether there may have been someone inside the building during the time of the incident.

According to Gulfport Police, all northbound and southbound lanes were closed between 19th Street and 23rd Street.

Authorities say they plan to reopen at least one lane of the Highway 49 as soon as possible.

Gulfport Fire, Gulfport Police, and American Medical Response all responded to the scene. No injuries were reported.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
