Brittney Reese Wins Silver in Long Jump at 2016 Olympics
Gulfport’s own Brittney Reese wins silver in the women’s long jump final at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Reese’s family watched nervously alongside church members this evening at Brittney’s home church in Gulfport, Mount Bethel Baptist Church.
After three fouls on her first four attempts, Reese walked away with a personal best of 7.15 meters on her last jump.
Although she didn’t bring home the gold, her family still views her as a champion. Brittney’s sister Kimyata Young said, “I’m very, very happy for her right now. This is a big accomplishment. It’s not where she wanted to be, but she’s there, from having hip surgery to getting silver. We’re happy. Very happy.”
Reese is a six time world champion in long jump and sits behind only two other athletes when it comes to the longest jump posted by an American woman.
