Bridge re-dedication in Jackson County
One of Jackson County’s two official hurricane evacuation routes is back up and running.
Tuesday, Southern District Transportation Commissioner Tom King was on hand at a re-dedication ceremony in Jackson County for State Route 57, officially adding it back to the hurricane evacuation route list.
Earlier this year in August, MDOT reopened the Red Creek Bridge on State Route 57 after being struck by a truck in September of 2017.
The new $7.7 million bridge replaces the old steel truss bridge. King said, “We’re here to let everyone know the bridge is open, has been open since August, to let everyone know that it’s good, wider, made of concrete and will be here for many, many years.”
The new bridge is accessible to all forms of traffic including commercial vehicles and freight traffic and also provides Gulf Coast residents with another way to get their families out of the path of potentially devastating hurricanes.
