Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast celebrates Youth of the Year at annual meeting

The Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast hosted their annual meeting and Youth of the Year celebration at the Great Southern Club.

Students involved in the Boys and Girls Club are met with caring mentors, innovative, evidence-based programs and a safe place to grow.

The keynote speaker for the event was inventor and researcher Lonnie Johnson.

Prior to his speech, club level recipients of the Youth of the Year award gave a short testimony about how the Boys and Girls Club changed their lives.

After judges listened to their speeches, Laela Schenck from the Forest Heights Club received the overall award for Youth of the Year.

Schenck said the Boys and Girls Club provided an after-school and a summer program for her and her siblings. “It feels so amazing. I’m just so grateful to be able to tell my story and just to see how many people came out to support the Boys and Girls Club. It’s just inspiring. It’s amazing.”

Schenck will represent the Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast at the February State Youth of the Year Competition.
