Bonnet Carre Spillway to close ten bays

While some of the bays of the Bonnet Carre Spillway are closing, over 150 other ones still remain open.

One hundred and fifty-eight bays are still open with an expected closing in the next week.

According to the Army Corps of Engineers, they’ll be monitoring levels in the Mississippi River to make sure they remain low enough to not cause stress on the levees in New Orleans.

Dr. Moby Solangi with the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies tells News 25 that while it is a good start, there are still many issues affecting the Mississippi Gulf Coast. “Ten out of 158 bays is very small amount. I’m sure they’re going to monitor it. The problem we have is that Lake Pontchartrain is full of river water from over 100 days of opening and that’s going to still continue to trickle into the Mississippi Sound.”
