Blood Center and Singing River team up to hold blood drive in Pascagoula

There’s no better time to donate blood than Blood Donor Awareness Month!

The Blood Center hosted a blood drive at First Presbyterian Church on behalf of Singing River Health System.

There has been a nationwide blood shortage since COVID-19 and the blood amount needed is constantly struggling to be met.

The Blood Center is located in New Orleans, but a new donor center has opened in Ocean Springs.

People enjoy donating to the Blood Center because they know their blood will be going to one of the three Singing River health locations which means they are helping local people. Blood Center MS Gulf Coast Coordinator John Pace said, “If you need blood, a blood component, there’s no substitute. You can’t make it in lab, it doesn’t have an extended shelf life, we can’t freeze it, or stock it. The only way to provide blood that’s needed when it’s needed is with a fresh and rotating donor pool.”

Singing River Health Lab Medical Director John Webster said, “When we have blood drives like this, it’s absolutely critical that people show up and it’s important to know that the hospital systems are very good steward of that product and we try to make sure that people most in need are getting it.”

If you wish to donate blood to the Blood Center, you can stop by Ocean Springs Blood Center on 2939 Bienville Boulevard on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
