AMR safety tips for Thanksgiving
As we get ready to enjoy delicious Thanksgiving meals, AMR shares with us safety tips on how to prevent fires while cooking fried turkeys.
News 25’s Veronica Bayona also gives us a closer look at AMR’s 27th annual Home for the Holidays project.
With Thanksgiving just a few days away, turkey fryers are getting ready to come out of their boxes. On average, each year U.S. fire departments respond to over 1,700 cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day. AMR Gulfport Chief of Operations James Carver said, “One thing I think a lot of folks don’t take into consideration is having a fire extinguisher nearby. You don’t want to spray water on a grease fire because it’s just going to cause it to spread.”
Carver tells News 25 always thaw your turkey completely and never refill the fryer with oil in order to avoid flashovers that can cause the oil to catch fire. Also, make sure you keep children away and never leave the turkey unattended. In case a fire did erupt, the first thing you must do is call 911.
AMR isn’t stopping at just turkey frying safety tips. This Thanksgiving Day they are bringing back their Home for the Holidays Good Will project. “We offer a chance for people that are in the nursing home and stuff like that to have dinner with their families. We’ll go pick them up at the nursing home, take them to their families house, and pick them up after dinner is all done and take them back to the nursing home.”
Thanksgiving Day, twelve nursing facility residents will benefit from the Home for the Holidays program. “They’re all very thankful for it. They really are. We don’t expect any type of gratitude, you know, tips or anything like that. That’s not what we’re in it for. We just do it to be nice. That’s what it’s all about.”
