American Red Cross Needs Blood Donations
This afternoon in Hancock County, the American Red Cross was fighting a nationwide shortage of blood.
Hollywood Casino hosted a blood drive and the American Red Cross urged the public to take part in the donation of blood to combat one of the biggest shortages in recent years.
Denise Smith with the American Red Cross of South Mississippi tells News 25 that shortages are not uncommon at this time of the year, but most blood banks are in dire need of donations. “Typically at this time of the year we are having what is called a critical storage which happens during the holidays because people aren’t thinking about donating. They’re actually out shopping, spending time with their family, but the need for blood doesn’t stop. It’s every two seconds somebody is in need of blood. Right now we are actually under what is called an emergency appeal which means blood is going off the shelves in blood banks faster than we can put it on the shelves. It is extremely important for anyone that can donate blood to come out.”
If you’d like to help fight the blood shortage there will be another blood drive at Merit Health in Biloxi tomorrow from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
