Abuse Cases Rise over the Holidays

The holidays are a time for family, friends, and fun, but unfortunately they can also bring unwanted stress and hardships to some households.
The pressures of having a perfect Christmas, coupled with a strained budget and the consumption of alcohol during Yuletide celebrations can often result in an increase in domestic abuse instances.
Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence has been providing support for abuse victims on the Gulf Coast since the 80s. The center wants anyone who deals with abuse this holiday season to know that this isn’t something that they have to face on their own. Stacey Myers with the Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence said, “Another thing we see a lot of times during this time of year for holidays is people will stay in violent homes because they want to keep the family unit together and you know it’s the holidays and they want to be able to have a happy time and that increases the stress of trying to make things perfect for the holidays so people can stay in times when they normally wouldn’t stay and we see instances of domestic violence go up during this period of time.”
Anyone facing domestic abuse can contact the Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence at 800-800-1396.
