Movers and Shakers Club hosted Juneteenth celebration

In South Mississippi, the Movers and Shakers Social Club hosted a Juneteenth celebration in Biloxi Saturday.

The day began with a 5K unity walk in honor of those who paved the way in the past.

Following the walk, the club hosted a large party to celebrate the holiday. There was food, live music, vendors, activities for children, and even a three-on-three basketball tournament.

News 25 spoke with Movers and Shakers founding member Trae Brown about the celebration. “We wanted to bring back Juneteenth the way it was when I was growing up right here in this community, and Juneteenth is for the acknowledgement of freed enslaved Africans, and so we need to know and understand ‘hey this is something to be celebrated. That emancipation is something to be celebrated, and we’re so super excited that people are coming out and the community is responding.”

This was the inaugural Juneteenth event for the club and the team expects to host more in the future.
