Residents signing petition to bring Amtrak Rail Service to the Gulf Coast
Mississippians have a petition going around for people to sign their names in support of the Amtrak that will go from New Orleans to Mobile with stops along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The petition was sent out yesterday and more than 900 people have already signed in support of the Gulf Coast Amtrak.
The Surface Transportation Board will hold a virtual, public hearing on February 15th where the petition will be presented and the board will hear testimonies.
Following the public hearing, they will have an evidentiary hearing on March 9th. After all the hearings, the board will make their final decision. Southern Rail Commission Chairman Knox Ross said, “I think this is something that can pull us together, that can bring people from the outside in to enjoy our Coast, to make it easier and a better place to live. People will have another transportation option. So, we think this is something we need to be investing in.”
