Bulldog Day 2016

If you haven’t heard the bark about Bulldog Day at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, it’s one of their biggest days of the year. Thousands of prospective freshmen are getting a feel for one of the college’s three campuses in the state. News 25’s Gina Tomlinson has the details.
Deciding where to go to college can be one of life’s biggest decisions. A herd of high school seniors exploring Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College stomped through the Jefferson Davis campus. Staphone Young was one of them. After losing his grandfather last year, Young says he wants to go to college to support his family. “Just an education and knowledge to be able to obtain that education, so you can get a better job.”
On Bulldog Day, thousands of prospective freshmen get to see what MGCCC has to offer. A high school senior last year at this time, freshman Harlie Gill is on the campus activities board and helps recruit students. “It was such a friendly atmosphere when I came here for Bulldog Day that I decided I want to go here and make it a friendly place for everybody else that’s not sure about college.”
The types of degrees, majors, graduation rate, facilities and location are all factors to consider before choosing a college. MGCCC Jefferson Davis Campus Vice President Dr. Jonathan Woodward said, “One of the main concerns for the American public right now is the cost of education, specifically the cost of higher education. You can get that same quality education by coming here to Gulf Coast.”
Students got a chance to tour the campus. Officials say what is really unique is the size of their classrooms. “If you have trouble in your classes, you’re going to get a chance to work with those teachers one on one. The small class size is important and so is the opportunity to get involved as a leader,” said Dr. Woodward.
Leadership is taken seriously at MGCCC, evidenced by all the student involved organizations at Bulldog Day because college extends beyond the books for students earning their degrees. “Get you degree, but really become who you are in life. That’s really what it is about,” said Gill.
