Secretary of State reports voting machine outages, website issues on Election Day

JACKSON, Miss. (WXXV) – Mississippi election officials say voter turnout activity has generated a high volume of calls to the state’s Elections Hotline as polls remain open across the state on Election Day.

According to the Mississippi Secretary of State‘s Office, reports received by noon Tuesday included a late-opening precinct, voting machines that were temporarily out of service, and accessibility issues affecting some state agency websites. Officials said election operations and election security systems have not been affected by the website issues.

The Secretary of State’s Office also reported receiving numerous calls from voters seeking to verify their voter registration status. Election officials reminded voters that anyone who arrives at the correct polling place but is not listed in the poll book should request an affidavit ballot. Officials said eligible voters casting affidavit ballots within their county can still have their votes counted while voter registration records are updated.

Polls across Mississippi close at 7 p.m. However, any voter who is in line when polls close is legally entitled to cast a ballot. County election officials will begin tabulating ballots after voting concludes.

The Secretary of State’s Office encourages voters to use the state’s “My Election Day” portal to find polling information and view sample ballots specific to their address before heading to the polls.

Anyone experiencing issues at their polling place can contact the Mississippi Elections Division at 800-829-6786 or visit YallVote.ms for assistance. The Secretary of State’s Office said reports of election-related problems may be referred to appropriate law enforcement or prosecutorial authorities, noting the office does not have enforcement authority over election matters.
