Gulfport man sentenced to 30 years for attempted murder

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- A Gulfport man has been sentenced in a 2023 attempted murder case.
Forty-three-year-old Lashaun Unger pled guilty to attempted murder in connection with the November 8, 2023 stabbing assault of his former girlfriend.
According to Assistant District Attorney Haley Necaise Broome, officers with Gulfport PD responded to a home on Government Street in reference to a reported assault.
Upon arrival, officers heard a female victim yelling for help. Officers found Unger on top of the victim inside a bedroom closet. According to officials, Unger was covered in blood and a bloody knife was nearby.
Officers removed and detained Unger and then rendered aid to the victim until medical personnel arrived.
The victim identified Unger as her ex-boyfriend and told officers he stabbed her after she told him to leave.
Unger was sentenced to 30 years in custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. His sentence is to be served day for day as a habitual offender.
