Jackson County Animal Shelter taking care of animals rescued from dogfighting operation
JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)- Nearly 70 animals that were rescued from an alleged dogfighting operation are now being cared for by the Jackson County Animal Shelter.
Shelter officials say they received 67 dogs, two goats, and a rooster from the property late last week, which has put even more strain on the already crowded shelter.
They had to euthanize 15 animals in order to accept the influx of rescued animals, something shelter leaders say was a last resort and something they haven’t had to do in years.
Since receiving the rescued dogs, the shelter staff have been working around the clock to find homes and fosters for other animals in their care and have had some success with that, but they still need more help.
Princeton Knox, Tracy Daniels, and Jaswan Butler are facing a list of charges in this case, including dog fighting, animal cruelty, and probation violations. More charges are possible.
The dogs rescued from the dogfighting ring are not up for adoption at this time due to the ongoing nature of the case.
Due to the strain on the shelter’s capacity, they are not accepting any surrenders at this time.
They are scanning the rescued dogs for microchips to see if any of them were missing from their original homes.
