Fourth of July travel safety
This Fourth of July weekend went fairly smooth for Mississippi Highway Patrol officers.
Highway Patrol Spokesman Chase Elkins says there were no fatalities statewide over the weekend and ten people were arrested on DUI violations. Traffic is still expected to be high today and tomorrow going into the Fourth of July holiday.
Law enforcement officials are reminding everyone that patrols will still be out over the next two days and to be cautious when out on the road. “There’s going to be a lot of traffic on the roads. A lot of people trying to get to their destinations and their cookouts and those types of things. We encourage people to hang out and enjoy the day and what it stands for, but to be safe doing it. So, we’ll have increased patrols tomorrow. We’ll have some of the guys coming in on their days off and help beef up patrols and have visibility out on the highways,” said Elkins.
Officials will also be on the lookout for those violating the new seat belt law that went into effect July 1st.
