Coast doctor talks Substance Use Disorder and treatments
GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV) — It’s Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month… which is a time to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and remind those who are struggling that there are options available for recovery.
Substance Use Disorder, also known as SUD, affects families of all ages, backgrounds, and entire communities. It’s categorized as a chronic, treatable, medical disease that affects the brain in many complex ways.
A Gulfport doctor we spoke with explains that the disorder is not as simple as many are led to believe.
Often times, it develops gradually, making it difficult to recognize in ones self or a loved one. According to Dr. Safia Mohiuddin, research shows that around 40-60% of a person’s risk of being affected by substance use disorder is hereditary, so it’s important to know the signs.
It’s also important to keep in mind that help is available for those struggling with Substance Use Disorder. Coastal Family Health Center offers aid through medication-assisted treatment for opioid and alcohol use, in house therapy referrals, and guidance on engaging with community support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous.
Coastal Family Health Center has multiple locations across the coast which offer confidential treatment options. Click here for more details.
