A Hattiesburg Civil Rights leader is the latest figure to be recognized with a Mississippi Freedom Trail Marker.

Hattiesburg leaders unveiled the Victoria Jackson Gray Adams Marker outside a home that was the hub of the 1964 Freedom Summer Movement.

For her part, Gray Adams dedicated much of her life to educating disenfranchised communities and supporting voter registration at the height of the Civil Rights Movement.

She was also the first black woman to run for the Mississippi State Senate.

Gray Adams died in 2006, but Hattiesburg leaders say this marker will continue to ensure her contributions to the Magnolia State live on in the decades to come.
