Southern District Public Service Commissioner Wayne Carr responds to Coast Electric billing error and rate adjustments

BILOXI, MS (September 18, 2024)— Southern District Mississippi Public Service Commissioner Wayne Carr wants to inform the public about a recent billing error affecting approximately 4,500 Coast Electric accounts.
From January 2024 until August 23, 2024, these members were inadvertently underbilled at a rate of $0.041 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) instead of the correct rate of $0.087 per kWh.
As of August 23, 2024, the billing error has been rectified, and affected members are now being billed accurately. A letter is being mailed today to all impacted members, providing details regarding the difference in the amount owed. This adjustment will be reflected in their accounts with a billing statement scheduled for October.
To assist during this transition, Coast Electric is committed to working with those affected to establish manageable payment arrangements upon request.
“While the MPSC does not set their rates, we still want to work to ensure quality service and reasonably adequate rates are provided to their customers,” Commissioner Carr stated. “We understand that this situation may cause concern for their members. Coast Electric’s priority is to ensure that all members are informed and supported throughout this process.”
