Gulfport Fire Department swears in honorary firefighter
A couple of Coast celebrities went to the Gulfport Fire Station for a special swearing in ceremony.
Romeo Weaver was sworn in by Chief Billy Kelley earlier Tuesday morning.
The Shuckers’ mascot Schooner and Mississippi Sea Wolves’ mascot Hook arrived at station 9 for the big day.
Romeo was given a fire uniform of his very own as well. Fire Chief Kelley said, “Seeing his mother’s face, it was special just because I couldn’t imagine as a mother what she is going through every day with his treatments and appointments and everything that they go through as a family. So, just seeing the look on their face made it all worth it.
Romeo’s mom, Yesenia Pineda, said, “It’s not an everyday thing where a handicap person can come and do what a firefighter can do. So, for them to consider him and be thoughtful of his handicap situation, I just really appreciate them.”
