Small Town, Big Crowds: Wiggins and Stone County bring in record number of tourists
You may be surprised to hear tourists are loving the little city of Wiggins. Dubbed the “gateway to the gulf coast” and the perfect place for a secluded getaway in the woods — tourists are stopping in Stone County.
The Stone County Economic Development Partnership presented a commemorative check to the Mayor — showcasing the total amount of money brought to the city by tourism.
In just one year, tourists poured over 13 million dollars into the local economy.
Wiggins Mayor Darrell Berry says an increase in tourism has created an economic boom for Wiggins.
“It’s benefited us a lot. Even though we are small, we really don’t have to travel to other cities to eat anymore, to dine out, to just about do anything,” said Mayor Darrell Berry. “Anything you can find at the bigger cities, you can find it here.”
Stone County is expected to surpass all of its tourism records this year – and summer break hasn’t even started. The secret to the success? SCEDP Executive Director Layla Essary says it’s staying true to themselves.
“We’re excited that we can tell the story about Stone County and everything that we have to offer here,” said SCEDP Executive Director, Layla Essary. “Not only across Mississippi and the southeast but for international visitors who have wanted a truly southern experience but also lots of fun things to do while you stay.”
