11 injured in charter bus accident on I-10 in Hancock County
Officials are responded to an accident on I-10 westbound near Exit 13 in Hancock County.
According to Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Cal Robertson, a charter bus carrying 56 University of South Carolina students traveling to New Orleans was involved in a single vehicle accident at approximately 3 p.m.
A total of 11 injuries, with nine students being transported by ambulance to local hospitals. The bus driver and another student were flown to out of state hospitals after they were ejected from the vehicle.
The 2007 MCI Motor Coach Bus owned by Dixon Motor Express LLC of Chester, South Carolina, collided with a center concrete barrier.
The bus driver, 55-year-old, Tina Wilson, prevented the bus from flipping over while it was out of control. When the bus returned up-right, the windshield blew out and the bus driver was ejected.
One of the students ran to the steering wheel and grabbed ahold of it and brought the bus under control.
The bus was out of control for over half a mile.
School buses transported the other students to Bay St. Louis Municipal Court to wait on a new bus.
MHP, the Commercial Transportation Enforcement Division, Bay St. Louis Fire, Bay St. Louis Police, and Hancock County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene.
The incident is still under investigation.
