Receiving ashes: What is Ash Wednesday and who gets the ashes?

Happy Lundi Gras, everyone!
Two more days of carnival fun before the Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, a time of fasting and abstinence and reflection as Christians prepare for the resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter.
Christians receive ashes in the sign of a cross on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday as a reminder their human mortality and the importance of reconciling with God.
And while most people associate Ash Wednesday with the Catholic faith, we know that others also observe the custom — the Lutheran, Methodist and Episcopal churches also participate in Ash Wednesday.
Let’s take a look at where you can receive ashes on Wednesday.
According to the Gulf Pine Catholic, every Catholic parish in South Mississippi will have services — many more than one — on Ash Wednesday.
Pastor Dave Parr at Grace Lutheran Church will be hosting a drive-thru event in the parking lot on Highway 90 just south of Jeff Davis Avenue in Long Beach.
Parr and other area ministers will be stationed there to administer ashes from 6:30 am to 8:30 am.
In addition, Methodist and other Lutheran churches will hold Ash Wednesday services. Check with your house of worship for service times.
The Lenten season will last until March 31, when we will celebrate Easter! We hope our viewers who observe lent will be able to get to one of the services on Wednesday as we look forward to the coming of Easter.
