WXXV Student Athlete of the Week: Hancock High School’s Brooklyn Cuevas

One popular quote reads, “I am a strong woman because a strong woman raised me,” and that statement could not be more spot on for a local basketball all-star out of Hancock county.

Her mother practiced in the same gym she spends countless hours in now, and she now wants to follow in her footsteps earning some bling for her achievements. Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the week, the pace setter and point earner, Brooklyn Cuevas.

“I’ve been playing since I was in kindergarten, and my mom actually played her,” said Cuevas. “She won the state championship in 2004 I’m pretty sure and then I just kind of fell in love with it from kindergarten and coach Jeremy was one of my coaches from peewee all the way until now.”

Brooklyn Cuevas is a high school basketball player for Hancock County who gets to live out her moms legacy each and every day she puts on the Hawk uniform.

When asked what motivates her and why she’s played for 13 years now, she says it’s all because of her mom, Summer.

“I’ve improved my game a lot because you get to play more,” said Cuevas. “Get to see all the talent out there and there’s a lot of really good talent.”

She was surrounded by a lot of talent because she too is incredibly talented. Not only was she recently selected to represent the Magnolia state in the Mississippi/Alabama all-star game – she also recorder her 1,000th point of her high school career.

“My parents always said that I was really close and I was always like how close?,” she said. “When they said it on the announcements I said out loud Did I actually? Is that real? And they were like yeah you reached it and it was really exciting.”

Even tough she doesn’t show a lot of emotion, there is no question that her heart is fully dedicated to the game and she gets to continue playing the game she loves with William Carey University.

“I’m excited about William Carey,” she said. “I love their coaches and I actually player with three teammates from there. Kay Kay, Maddie, and Jenna so I am excited to play with them again.

There’s no reason to rush her senior season away just yet. After all, she still has her eyes on the prize – just like her mother did.
