Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week, d’Iberville’s Kaelyn “KK” McKenzie!
Sometimes life has a funny way of changing directions, but a lot of the time it also leads you to exactly where you should be. That’s the story of one of the best female athletes d’Iberville has ever seen, Kaelyn McKenzie, commonly known as KK. McKenzie has been a competitor all her life, dedicating most of her early years to the sport of gymnastics. During her time in middle school, McKenzie began to show interest in a different sport, that still very much still has to do with running and jumping. Making the switch to track and field wasn’t the easiest for McKenzie, especially when the resources seemed out of reach, but if you know anything about her, she’s definitely not one to give up when things get hard.
Continuing to hone on her craft during the next few years, McKenzie’s tenth grade year was when she had a light bulb moment that maybe this sport was for her. From training after her sophomore year to now her senior season, she is one of the most decorated track and field athletes at d’Iberville high school. Just last week alone, McKenzie won four regional titles in the class 7A Region four meet, taking home first place in triple jump, high jump, 200 meter and long jump which also set the state lead. Not only is she a four-time school record holder, but also a National Champion. A double National Champion, actually, securing both the long jump and high jump indoor title this past February in Birmingham.
Even though her high school career is coming to a close, McKenzie won’t be hanging up her spikes yet as she has signed to continue her track and field career at the University of South Alabama! Congratulations KK, and we wish you the best of luck in the rest of your jumping journey!
