Singing River hosts flag raising ceremony to honor veterans

Singing River Health System commemorated veterans Thursday at the Gulfport Hospital by raising a special flag which symbolizes all branches of military services.

The brief ceremony was observed by several veterans, including hospital staff who previously served.

It was marked by solemn prayer followed by a posting of the colors by the West Harrison High JROTC color guard.

Finally, they were joined by the guest of honor, Commander Chris Cambre, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He emphasized that while he represents the VFW, his speech was to honor the sacrifices of veterans from all branches and their families.  “Today, they went ahead and served the flag that has all the branches of military service — which is to also honor all veterans who served under any of those banners. It was actually my honor to be able to come out here and speak and honor all veterans today. That’s what VFW is all about.  We take pride in our veterans, and we honor them every chance we get.”

The ceremony at the Gulfport Hospital was among a series of Veterans Day events happening across the Singing River Health System.
