Local students make cards for first responders

In recognition of September 11th, students at a local school in Gulfport are showing their appreciation for first responders in our community.

Women of Wisdom, a nonprofit marketplace ministry, along with other community partners, is coordinating the 5th annual appreciation event ‘WOW honors First Responders’ which will take place on Patriots Days, September 11th.

Librarian Carla Nugent said, “I think it’s a part of history. It’s something they have to remember and that’s a key essential thing, what it was built on because a lot of the kids weren’t born about that time.”

It is history that will continue to be passed down for generations to come. Teacher Karen Levins said, “It’s really become real for them, we’ve had conversations today that we may not have had if we had not started this project. They’ve been very concerned about the safety of our country and what the first responders went through that day.”

Fifth grader Kennedy Chitwood said, “So, what I was really learning about this was like ‘oh, so like how the people reacted when they didn’t know like were they scared. Or, they feel like they’re about to die or were they like what’s going to happen.”

In preparation for the event, students at Hope Academy are creating decorative cards that will be gifted to local first responders.

Students were very excited to have their hand-made cards delivered to local heroes. Fifth grader Brennan Goldin said, “I made this picture and letter in honor of the first responders who risked their lives for us.”

Fifth grader Sophia Gibson said, “I drew a heart balloon because it symbolizes our love for our first responders.”

Fifth grader Dylan Caddy said, “I drew an ambulance on the road going to the Twin Towers to save all the people.”

Fifth grader Liam Perez said, “Always be brave and even when you are scared, know that there’s always a good cause for it.”
