Gulfport City Councilwoman responds to deadly shooting at AT&T store

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- Community members continue to mourn the loss of two people in a shooting at an AT&T store in Gulfport Monday.

Flowers, balloons, and photos now line the front of the AT&T store at the Crossroads Shopping Center.

Ward 6 Councilwoman Carrissa Corbett has spoken out on the tragic incident.

In a statement, she commended the acts of bravery inside the store which seemed to have saved many lives. She also noted that tragedies like this one affect more than those who were physically present, they leave an impact on entire communities. “The people there, you know, how they just tragically lost their lives. I did hear of the young guy that was just going to lock the door, and then the young girl that was brave and thought in a moment of tragedy to go and unlock that back door to get people to safety. That was a moment that just put chills through my whole body, because in that moment, we often think of just going to places and doing what we have to do. We never imagine having to go somewhere and be traumatized from going outside for the rest of our lives, right? So, even in that moment, someone that was just simply going to the AT&T store to check on their phone services or pay their phone bill has now been affected. And this has caused some trauma in their life. It’s kind of scary; we’re living in these times. But, for everyone to come together and just make sure we’re still uplifting out community in Gulfport was amazing to me.”
