West Harrison Sendoff Performance

The West Harrison Hurricane Band gets a huge send off after being accepted as one of the marching bands in the annual New Year’s Rose Parade in California.

Each year, thousands of spectators line the Rose Parade route to enjoy a two-hour parade filled with floral floats and talented marching bands. Among those bands is the West Harrison Hurricane Band. Senior Saxophone player Azurrea Curry said, “It’s really exciting being a senior, I was able to go to New York. Now, we get to go to California and get to experience all these things a lot of us wouldn’t be able to any other time, any other place.”

Landing a slot in the parade lineup was no easy task. The band had to comprise a five minute video that described the band and its community support. The video included performances and the reason they deserve to participate this year. Senior Saxophone player Jacob Raymond said, “We’ve done a lot. We have practice after school. After marching season we kept it going then we have third block which is like two hours and we’ve been here a lot. It’s a lot of hard work. It’s been cold. It’s been hot, you really don’t know.”

“We worked really hard for this parade. We’re here Tuesdays, Thursdays, outside constantly marching all the time. They push us really hard and I think we’re going to represent our state well.”

The band flies out December 27th and will perform in the five and a half mile Rose Parade January 1st, something members say they can’t wait for. “When we’re marching and you see all those people, it’s crazy. You just get so excited. You’re so happy to be there.”
