92nd annual Blessing of the Fleet happening this weekend
A Biloxi event steeped in tradition and history returns this weekend for its 92nd edition.
Saturday and Sunday will be packed with different events as part of the celebration this year.
Saturday at 4 p.m. will be the Blessing of the Fleet Mass at St. Michael Catholic Church followed by the coronation of the 2021 Shrimp Queen at the Biloxi Civic Center at 6 p.m.
On Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m., the dropping of the wreath will take place in the Biloxi Channel.
2020 Shrimp Queen Erin Schreck says after having to modify some of the festivities last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people can expect a lot of fun at this year’s events. “Expect lots of fun. The Blessing of the Fleet is always something that’s exciting, whether you’re a working boat or a pleasure boat, you can pass by and be blessed by Father Dominic, so it’s just going to be a really exciting weekend.”
The Blessing of the Fleet was first held in 1929 and traditionally marks the beginning of the fishing season for shrimpers.
