What is norovirus?

Last week dozens of people got sick after their events at the Coast Convention Center. Officials say the cause could have been the norovirus.

The norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea.

The CDC says the norovirus illness can shed billions of norovirus particles and it only takes a few virus particles to make other people sick.

You can get norovirus from having direct contact with an infected person, consuming contaminated food or water, or touching contaminated surfaces and then putting your unwashed hands in your mouth. Dr. Steve Demetropoulos said, “So you go into the grocery store, you hold a basket and you touch something that someone has been sneezing and coughing on and then you touch your face. You inoculate your face, your nose, your mouth, and that’s how you get it. So, don’t touch your face before you use a hand sanitizer. It’s about 100 percent effective.”

The norovirus is sometimes referred to as the stomach flu or stomach bug, but the norovirus illness is not related to the flu which is caused by the influenza virus.
