The U.S. Army hit a big milestone today and members of the branch on the Gulf Coast are celebrating.
Remembrance. Celebration. Life. Those are the values being put on display by members of the U.S. Army as they celebrate the branch’s 244th birthday. The U.S. Army was established June 14th, 1775. 169th Engineering Battalion Company Commander Patrick Drury said, “A lot of people have died for our nation and then we always have to remember that we need to celebrate. We remember those through celebration.”
Along with members of the Navy and Air Force, soldiers from the Army’s 169th Engineering Battalion-Charlie Company marked the celebration with the cutting of birthday cake at the Seabee Base in Gulfport. Sgt. 1st Class Willie Lesane said, “It’s a great honor to be able to celebrate a birthday. We work really hard and this is our turn to celebrate all the hard work we’ve done.”
Along with the cake cutting ceremony, members of the Army also celebrated by winning a relay race against the Air Force and Navy this morning.
As the youngest member of the Army in attendance, Pvt. 2nd Class Coren May was one of the soldiers tasked with cutting the cake and reflect on his Army experience so far. “It is a pretty big responsibility and obligation, but I’m pretty glad I took it.”
While the Army is another year older, the mission remains unchanged. “We make sure that we protect the ideals of the nation.”
