South Mississippi has some of the highest rates of child abuse in the state. CASA of Hancock County has a creative way to bring awareness.
Battling the fog, some runners dressed like their favorite superheroes and competed in the annual Superhero 5K in Waveland. The proceeds from the race benefit CASA of Hancock County.
CASA recruits and trains volunteers to advocate for children who find themselves in foster care as a result of child abuse. Cynthia Chauvin with CASA of Hancock County said, “With the high number of kids in foster care along the Coast, we want to be able to have a volunteer to be able to advocate for every child in foster care. So, awareness is the way we recruit volunteers. So, as much as this is promoting healthy families, it’s an awareness activity for us and a recruitment event.”
