2/8 – Jeff Vorick’s “Severe Thunderstorm Potential” Wednesday Afternoon Forecast

Mostly cloudy skies, warm temperatures, and a 50% coverage of scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon. A line of showers and thunderstorms that will make its way east along the I-10 corridor will provide for a near-100% chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight.

The Storm Prediction Center has our area under a Level 2 of 5 threat for severity for the majority of the Southern Six counties. The threat is greatest for areas to our north due to ingredients being better aligned there. There is the potential of damaging straight-line wind gusts. Also, efficient rainmakers will come with these thunderstorms. The threat will be from around 9 PM through 3 AM.

The cold front associated with the activity will be sluggish to depart the area. Rain chances will remain elevated Thursday, Friday, and even into the first part of Saturday. A secondary system will be behind the initial cold front and will help provide for additional rounds of rainfall. There is a 50-60% chance of rainfall Thursday and Friday with this system.

Clearing and drying out is expected to begin Saturday. Winds will be elevated Saturday with the passage of the second cold front. The weekend will end on a colder note with Sunday morning having the potential for low temperatures in the 30s.
