18-Wheeler Overturns in Gulfport
A truck driver escaped with minor injuries after his truck flipped over on Rippy Road in Gulfport.
Neighbors called the Gulfport Police Department at about 10:30 Monday morning after they heard a loud crash outside and saw the 18-wheeler overturned in the ditch.
According to police, the driver was headed westbound on Rippy Road when he lost control of the vehicle. The driver tells police he believes his load was top heavy and it didn’t feel right as he was driving. Police say speed does not appear to be a factor.
Neighbors tell News 25 that curve in the road has been a concern for years. Rippy Road resident Shawn Pittman said, “The curve is very steep and people misjudge their speed coming around that corner and a lot of times it will sling them right into the ditch and on to the fence. I just don’t want to see anybody get killed here. I wish the city would do something about rearranging the street or do something to help slow it down or something. A sign is not going to do it.”
It took two tow trucks to bring the 18-wheeler upright. The stretch of Rippy Road between Creosote and Cuandet Road was closed to traffic for about two hours.
