18 Wheeler overturns causing diesel spill in Gulfport
There was a big mess on the interstate after an 18 wheeler overturns spilling diesel onto the roadway in Gulfport.
The accident happened just before 9 a.m. on the Highway 49 off ramp. The driver claims his brakes failed as he was taking the off ramp. About 200 gallons of diesel spilled onto the road as a result of the accident.
The off ramp was closed for several hours as hazmat crews cleaned up the diesel spill. Sgt. Joshua Bromen with Gulfport PD said, “The 18-wheeler was attempting to exit and lost control. It was carrying an unspecified amount of dirt and caused it to flip. The driver was transported for minor injuries. We did have about 200 gallons of diesel that spilled out of the vehicle. That’s a lot of this, what you are seeing now and what is taking so long is MDEQ is en route as well as the Gulfport Fire Department Hazardous Response Team. Trying to access the chemical spill and prevent anything possible from doing anything to the grass.”
The Mississippi Department of Environment Quality say they will be digging up to the top soil near the diesel spill and replacing it with new dirt. The ramp is now open.
