Zoning Change Challenges for Biloxi
Tensions are heating up between the City of Biloxi and Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann over plans to rezone acres of land on Point Cadet.
On Thursday, the city plans to meet to discuss rezoning more than 20 acres to make way for Margaritaville phase two, a $140 million proposal that Mayor Gilich believes will give the city a more family entertainment feel.
Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann’s council met with city officials last Thursday to advise that the city withdraw the request to rezone and leave the area for potential casino development, one that Mayor Gilich says was never disclosed to the city until now.
Last Wednesday, Mayor Gilich sent his letter to the secretary of state saying in part: “We do not think postponing the request for zoning changing is in the best interest of the citizens of the City of Biloxi and the state of Mississippi. Margaritaville Resort, which opened June 2016, brought a new type of visitor to our Coast market. Its proposed phase II expansion without question, with the added attractions, convention and hotel facilities, will bring significant numbers of these new visitors to us.”
