Youth Volunteers on the Coast
The excitement of summer break is just beginning but instead of traditional summer break activities, one group of kids from Nashville, Tennessee decided to start theirs off by lending a helping hand here in South Mississippi.
One hundred and thirty students from the Holy Family Catholic Church in Brentwood, Tennessee spent the week volunteering, doing all sorts of projects like fixing roofs, cleaning up trash, helping out at soup kitchens and more.
Today, a team was at Beauvoir giving their fence a fresh coat of paint. This is their sixth trip to the Coast, they call it Servo Deo, meaning ‘I serve God’ in Latin. Youth group chaperone Jay Hennessey said, “When we came down in 2011, it was amazing the devastation from Katrina five years after Katrina had been. We had so much cleanup even then. What is so cool and gratifying is to see how much this area has recovered. It’s amazing.”
Every year they come, the group stays at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis.
