Youth Program Graduation

Today, a dozen members of Gulfport’s youth community took a big step towards a brighter future.
The International Relief and Development Youth Build program’s inaugural graduation commencement marks the end of an intensive nine month training program that focuses on the areas of education, construction, leadership and community service.
The IRD’s goal is to help these youth build a skillset that will benefit them in the future while enrolled to earn their GED or high school diploma. IRD Program Director Jake Cook said, “I’m proud to say that some in this class have actually taken the ACT and been accepted into college. This is a real special night for us tonight. We’ve taken those at risk youth, we bring them in, we try to educate them in life skills, financial literacy. We teach them a construction trade. We set up job shadowing and we also help them prepare for the GED.”
The group that completed the course tonight will the IRD’s final graduating class.
