YMCA hosting ‘Parkinson’s Fitness Class’

Parkinson’s fitness classes are available at the YMCA.

They’re free to members and non-members every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 2 p.m. Each class is 45 minutes long and they’re available in Gulfport and Ocean Springs.

They’ll be offered now through 2021 provided by a grant with the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Experts say exercise is one of the only things that can delay the progression of the disease. Membership and Marketing Director YMCA Amanda Ray said, “What we are trying to do is slow the progression, try to reverse some of those symptoms, improve the posture. As they progress, they start to slowly curve the spine so we focus on sitting up nice and tall, big, and loud movements, and balance to reduce fall risk. All of the moves are ultimately going to help with the activities of daily living, getting out of bed, getting out of the car, things like that.”

If you can’t attend class, check virtual class on the Mississippi Gulf Coast YMCA’s Facebook page. You can also view multiple other virtual classes available.
